Our Challenge

As we expand our presence in the yacht genset market, our customers expect more than reliable power. They want a clean and comfortable onboard experience - no soot on the decks, no smoke in the air - while complying with strict environmental regulations around the globe.

The challenge for us was clear: integrate DPF and SCR aftertreatment into limited engine room space, while also extending emission certificates beyond existing Scania certificates to cover new power outputs. To achieve this, we needed a partner with the right experience and flexibility to help us deliver complete solutions.

We found this partner in Hug Engineering, a leader in exhaust gas aftertreatment with more than 45 years of proven expertise. Their ability to design and certify customized DPF and SCR systems, combined with hands-on support throughout engineering, packaging, and testing, gave us the confidence to deliver reliable and fully compliant yacht gensets.

Hug Engineering as the Solution

Sandfirden Technics supplied two luxury generator sets for a recent yacht project in the United Kingdom. These were equipped with fully custom-made DI 09-074 M @ 50 Hz engines, yacht-painted soundproof enclosures, and combined DPF-SCR systems from Hug Engineering.

We worked closely with Hug to design a solution that fit within the available space. Together, and with the support of Hug’s dedicated regulation and certification team, we were able to successfully amend the existing Scania certification to match the specific power requirements of the project. Their technical expertise and knowledge of regulations ensured a smooth and reliable process.

This successful collaboration began earlier. For previous superyacht projects, we relied on Hug’s MCS DPF systems to remove soot and keep the engines running cleanly. This gave us the confidence to continue the collaboration on the DI 09 project, and we see the collaboration expanding further in preparation for future DI 16 projects. By working together, we can confidently present ourselves as a premium generator set supplier.

The Result

Through this collaboration, we have successfully delivered two fully custom-made Scania DI 09-074 M @ 50 Hz generator sets, complete with Hug DPF-SCR systems. The result: clean air, soot-free decks, and peace of mind for yacht owners and crew.
