Scania
Expanding Our Marine Power Horizons
Scania has a long-standing heritage in marine propulsion, dating back to its earliest years. Over time, we’ve built a reputation for robust, reliable engines that power vessels around the world.
With a wide range of marine engines already meeting IMO Tier III standards through our own in-house developed aftertreatment systems, Scania offers proven solutions for clean and efficient performance across diverse applications.
However, as we set out to marinize our most powerful engine - the 16-litre V8, we encountered a pivotal challenge. While our in-house solutions delivered compliance and efficiency, the range was limited. To meet growing market demand for higher output and broader application coverage, we needed a partner who could help us extend our power offering without compromising on emissions, certification, or operational reliability.
In early 2021, we initiated a collaboration with Hug Engineering, a company with deep expertise in marine exhaust aftertreatment. Their proven SCR technology and engineering capabilities aligned perfectly with our goals. Together, we embarked on a journey to push the boundaries of marine power — delivering scalable, compliant solutions that uphold Scania’s legacy of innovation and performance.
Hug Engineering as the Solution
From day one, both teams set up a structured and collaborative approach. Dedicated working groups were formed, and biweekly meetings ensured clear communication at every step.
Scania provided the engine and emission data, while Hug Engineering matched it with their SCR technology and managed the entire certification process - from test-bed setup and DNV validation to final documentation. The project covered four engine families, each requiring individual certification, making standardization a key success factor.
Together, we agreed to keep the system based on Hug’s proven standard components with minimal modifications. This approach simplified logistics, supported scalability, and made the solution easy to deploy across our global dealer network.
One particularly innovative outcome was the dedicated dealer portal: Scania dealers can now enter engine details, instantly find the corresponding SCR system, access drawings and documentation, and order directly from Hug. This streamlined process saves time, reduces complexity, and enables both Scania and Hug to efficiently serve higher volumes with minimal administrative work.
Life is Good
Today, our Scania 16-litre marine engines proudly meet IMO Tier III certification requirements - powered by a proven, reliable SCR system from Hug Engineering.
The collaboration allowed us to focus on what we do best - developing robust, high-performance engines - while trusting Hug Engineering to handle emissions compliance with the same commitment to quality and precision.
The result is a long-term partnership built on transparency, professionalism, and shared success. Together, we’ve created a solution that benefits not only our companies, but also our global customers who rely on clean, efficient, and future-ready marine power.
